Competition: EFL Championship (Round 11)
Date: Saturday, 17 October 2026
Venue: Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough
Score: Middlesbrough 2–2 Cardiff City
Cardiff City stunned Middlesbrough with a clinical first-half display, racing into a 2-0 lead despite spending long spells without the ball. The opener arrived on 22 minutes when Jack Moylan carried the ball into space and finished smartly to put the visitors ahead. Middlesbrough pressed for a response, but Cardiff struck again on the stroke of half-time as Ollie Tanner doubled the advantage (45+1’), leaving the home side with a mountain to climb at the interval.
Middlesbrough’s reaction after the break was immediate. With Will Lankshear introduced at half-time, the home side’s tempo and threat increased, and they pulled a goal back through Tommy Conway on 58 minutes. Just three minutes later, Lankshear completed the turnaround with a quick-fire equaliser (61’), dragging Boro level and swinging the momentum heavily in the home side’s favour.
The closing stages tilted further towards Middlesbrough when Cardiff were reduced to ten men on 83 minutes: defender Gabriel Osho was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Lankshear. Middlesbrough poured forward in search of a winner, but Cardiff’s depleted side defended their box and held on for a point in a breathless finish.
